Walk For Values
History
Inspired by Sathya Sai Baba’s teachings, the students, teachers, and parents of the Sathya Sai School of Canada, located in Toronto, organized the first Walk for Values in the city of Toronto, Canada in 2003. Walk for Values has now spread to 10 cities across Canada and has grown to reach over 30 cities around the world, over 4 continents, in countries including the USA, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Hong Kong, India, and Malaysia.
What is Walk For Values?
Where there is purity of heart there is beauty of character.
Where there is beauty of character there is harmony in the home.
Where there is harmony in the home there is order in the nation.
Where there is order in the nation there is peace on earth.
Sathya Sai Baba
The “Walk for Values” is designed to raise the awareness of the 5 Human Values and to educate people on the importance of practicing them daily.
Each step taken during the walk for values is a step towards positive change. Whether you think of a single value or all of the human values, you are heading towards being the best version of yourself, for your family, for your community, and for the world.
We walk because we care. We care about the children in our community, in our nation and in the world. Each one of them deserve a world in which they may grow in peace and are loved for who they are.
Such a world is not a fantasy, all it requires is that each of us remember these five human values. So come join us and each step you take is the change that you want to see.
How is this Walk different?
Become the change you want in the world.
Mahatma Gandhi
Unlike other walks, this is not a money-raiser. You will raise money for any cause by soliciting pledges for money! Rather, you will make the world richer and healthier by pledging your commitment to practice values. You may also be motivated to serve your community through volunteer work, or by donating blood or food for the needy.
What do we Pledge?
Love as Thought is Truth.
Love as Action is Right Conduct.
Love as Understanding is Peace.
Love as Feeling is Non-violence.
Sathya Sai Baba
Your pledge is not monetary, but a pledge or commitment to practice one value of your choice. You pledge to practice one or more of the following values and/or sub-values: Love, Peace, Truth, Non-Violence and Right-Conduct. To show your resolve to be an example of the change you want, you will be required to wear a badge which labels the value which you plan to practice. For example, if you are impatient with your children as a parent, you may wish to choose the value “Patience.” If you wish to contribute to the health of the earth, you may wish to choose: “Conservation.”
Significance of the Logo
The five toes represent the five universal values: Truth, Right Conduct, Peace, Love, Non-Violence. These are values without borders, transcending barriers of caste, class, country, and creed and offering, when they are practiced, the sweet promise of individual and social renewal.
Shaped as a heart, the sole of the foot symbolizes love, the undercurrent of all human values and the core of our being.
The heel of the walker’s foot, drawn as a tear-drop, symbolizes the compassion that moves every human heart to serve and reach out to fellow beings and nature.
In its totality, the Walk for Values symbol has come to represent the long overdue march of the human race toward individual, social, environmental, and global reformation, starting with one human heart at a time!
